Winter Blues Call for Pastel Hues

Finally!!! The temperature has officially reached a point where I can wear boots and a warm jacket. I thought this day would never come. I know not everyone feels the same way, but for someone who grew up in New York where I was able to experience all four seasons, I look forward to even the subtlest weather changes.

During this time of the year its easy to start feeling a little down. The weather changes, its cold outside, the sun starts setting early, as early as five pm and who wants to climb out of a warm cozy bed when its cold and dark outside. Not me that’s for sure. Yet there are a few ways to improve your overall well-being during those gloomy days.

Some days, I feel overwhelmed with everything that I have to do, my job and just life events. During times like these, I turn on soothing music and walk. Walk until I am calm and collected. Taking the time to get away from the problems and be with myself puts all of my thoughts into perspective allowing me to make better decisions. 

Here are a few tips that help me feel happier during the winter months.

  1. Exercise: Even if it’s a short walk around the block, exercising releases the chemicals dopamine and  serotonin, which make you feel good. It helps relieve stress and anxiety. 
  2. Eat Chocolate: Dark chocolate is an antioxidant-rich superfood which is also a cancer-fighting food. The acids found in dark chocolate assist in cholesterol control. If those aren’t enough benefits, dark chocolate is also a tasty, guilt free snack, (in moderation of course). 
  3. Busy yourself with a hobby. Baking. yoga, knitting are all great indoor activities if the weather prevents you from doing any outdoor activities. 
  4. Read: Nothing is cozier than snuggling up in your favorite, cozy pajamas and picking up a great book. If reading isn’t really your thing, you can also download audiobooks and listen to them while making dinner or taking a nice long bubble bath. 

We are almost halfway through winter. The new year has begun, so make that change in your life which will lead your everyday life to be more fulfilling and pleasant.
